When did the television show "Pokemon" go downhill?

I am looking into buying the DVDs of the Pokemon show to watch after
having my surgery... what seasons/episodes should I avoid watching? I
have heard from a lot of people that the new episodes are absolutely
awful... I think the Indigo League episodes are safe, right?
