Broadway ready for tourist increase

Broadway sales wound up slightly the other day -- however, numerous shows were saving with this particular week. In the 34 productions round the boards, 20 of those only carried out seven perfs instead of the typical eight through the frame that incorporated Christmas Day. (One previewing show, "The road to Mecca," only carried out six.) The week's dim showtimes aided bring the Rialto cume lower by about $millions of for $23.3 million. However, clearly, numerous shows will prove to add one more perf to take advantage from the tourist boom which hits Broadway through the sesh between Christmas and New Year's, typically most likely probably the most lucrative frame of year. A year ago throughout the identical week, of a dozen productions carried out more when in comparison to some eight. The other day, regardless, a couple of shows handled to uptick despite playing one less perf -- most particularly "Godspell" ($341,203), which rose by about $50,000 in the rise likely fueled with the much spoken about in the title which is family-friendly resonance while using Yuletide season. The frame also underscored which shows reap the heftiest proportional benefits when travelers will be in town. Perennial "The Phantom in the Opera" ($1,038,045) hopped track of an astonishing 36% and "Mamma Mia!" ($704,380) walked up by 26%, with both musicals playing the normal eight shows. Meanwhile, "Wicked" ($2,107,015) once again broke the $2 million mark but still time reconquering the most effective 10, besting challenger "The Lion King" ($1,981,442). "Wicked" and "Spider-Guy: Turn Off the Dark" ($1,759,850) released gains of 20% each. Among the declines reported over the Primary Stem, the highest was at "Around the Apparent Day You Will See Forever" ($351,294), quickly decreasing by nearly $400,000 (or 53%), an fall of those severity the production's seven-perf week can't explain everything. It remains to look when the slump can be a holiday blip for just about any reveal that doesn't appear to offer the feel-good tourist advantage of large-title options, or whether it's a mark of challenges ahead since the show heads to the typically rough month from the month of the month of january. Among other recently opened up up musicals, the soon-to-shutter "Bonnie and Clyde" ($248,221 for eight shows) has not made an appearance to learn in the last-minute sales while "Lysistrata Manley" ($132,779 for seven), a completely new comedy with little title or cast recognition, is constantly struggle. Round the upside, though, tuner "Porgy and Bess" ($671,901) needed a enjoyable advance, playing seven previews just before its opening later. Figure seems solid for just about any new, serious-minded revival competing in the razzle-dazzle fare more vulnerable to pull attention through the holidays. Jokes Ricky Gervais Will Probably Make At the Golden Globes

Now that the 2012 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, some award show fans will be speculating on which movie will win the most prizes or what these honors will mean for Oscar chances ... but a second group of fans will take part in a much more gleefully nasty guessing game: What jokes will Ricky Gervais make during his job as host? Judging from his last two years as host, it's probably pretty easy to assume Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Mel Gibson and Madonna will factor heavily in Gervais's monologue on Jan. 15. Who else will receive the roast-master's caustic ire? Ahead, six potential jokes Ricky Gervais might tell at the Golden Globes. Please provide your own rimshot, and don't forget to tip your waitress and/or try the veal. 1. A lot of actors this year covered themselves in make-up to play old and decrepit characters: Leonardo DiCaprio in 'J. Edgar.' Meryl Streep in 'The Iron Lady.' And perhaps the most method of all, the director of 'W.E.,' Madonna. 2. Something about Angelina Jolie, 'In the Land of Blood and Honey' and her sexual relationship with Brad Pitt. (Use your imagination on this one; also, apologies.) 3. One of the big nominees this year is 'The Artist,' an homage to the golden age of silent film; it's surprising to see how well received it's been in the U.S., because it has two things that Americans absolutely hate: French people and reading. 4. Johnny Depp was not nominated for 'The Rum Diary,' meaning his check to the Hollywood Foreign Press didn't clear in time. 5. 'Moneyball' could be one of the night's big winners. The film is a true story about the Oakland Athletics and how they applied a revolutionary form of statistical analysis to the game of baseball. It's the film that dared to ask "What would happen if you combined two things that are very boring?" 6. God doesn't exist. Goodnight! New Ghost Rider Trailer Drives Up

The spirit of vengeance is nearFor his second go-around on the big screen, Nicolas Cage's cursed hero Johnny Blaze (better known to the world as Ghost Rider) has been handed over to the demented directing duo of Neveldine/Taylor to up the antic ante. We've already had one trailer back in August, and now a second promo is online for Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. Check it out below. The team behind this not-a-reboot-sort-of-a-sequel is in damage control mode with a certain sector of the audience at the moment, given the lacklustre reception handed to a nearly finished version of the movie shown at this year's Butt-Numb-A-Thon.But we'll reserve judgement until we see the whole thing, which promises to be laden with the usual craziness from the boys. You've got slow motion action, guns a-plenty and even Mr Rider spitting bullets back at the bad guys. This time around, we find Johnny hiding out in the depths of Eastern Europe, trying bitterly to struggle with his curse as the devil's bounty hunter. But then he's contacted by an obscure church sect and tasked with preventing a child from falling into the clutches of Satan himself (Ciaran Hinds). If he rescues the lad, the church will remove his unholy burden. If not? It's apocalypse time! With Idris Elba, Fergus Riordan and Johnny Whitworth all among the cast. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance is out on February 22.

In Recognition of Jodie Foster's Charged Father, Let us Title Her Worst Movie Parents

Happy Friday! Since all of the “real” news is taken care of, let’s target the things we actually worry about — namely, that Jodie Promote’s estranged 89-year-old father Lucius was sentenced to 5 years in jail to take $130,000 in lower obligations for houses he never built. That’s naughty, Mr. Promote! Maintain prison now. In recognition of the sacred occasion, let’s think about Jodie Promote’s worst parents in film. I understand my pick. OK, Iris in Taxi Driver was certainly a 12-year-old prostitute, but her parents were awesome enough to transmit Travis Bickle instructions of thank you for saving her in the roads. They obtain a pass. My election would go to Jodie’s parents within the bizarre, noticeably Canadian 1976 “horror” film The Small Girl Who Lives Lower the Lane, where Jodie plays Rynn Jacobs, a mysterious girl who lives inside a secluded Colonial town without parental supervision. She informs incomers lies about her poet father’s location, however (spoiler!) he bought Rynn a concealed house to ensure that her abusive mother wouldn’t find her — after which he committed suicide after becoming crictally ill. WHAT. Couldn’t he have setup her track of some better care than… isolation? Because despite the fact that Rynn’s mother isn’t within the picture, a nearby child molester (Martin Sheen!) keeps bursting into her house to spend time together with her. He makes its way into via a basement hatch sometimes. I don’t understand either. Am I missing a much better option? Or perhaps is it Jodie’s lonely idyll for that win? Crazy Horse Trailer: Frederick Wiseman Goes NSFW For Nude Revue

Docmaker Frederick Wiseman is legendary for his epic verite studies of institutions and the people who create, inhabit and/or operate them. He and his Zipporah Films banner are not quite as well-known for scandalously marketing said studies. But that was all before he made Crazy Horse, his all-access, skin-baring glimpse behind the scenes of the world’s most famous nude cabaret. Thus the first trailer for Crazy Horse, likely prompting the first time the name Frederick Wiseman and the acronym “NSFW” have had occasion to share a sentence. (I’ve heard that family-friendly sites including the NY Times and IMDB declined to post the video, itself some kind of milestone that I nevertheless was unable to confirm as of this writing.) In any case, watch as Wiseman chronicles the culture at Paris’s racy, renowned venue, where choreographer Philippe Decouffl is hard at work putting together a new revue called Dsirs. It’s all a little disjointed at just under two minutes — and very, very French! — but hey: It’s Frederick Wiseman. This is an event! With boobies! Anything to pull in the kids, I guess. Crazy Horse bows at NY’s Film Forum on Jan. 18 before (hopefully) rolling out to an art house near you. Have a look…

Wrinkles ((Arrugas))

A Perro Verde Films, Elephant in the Black Box, Cromosoma production with the participation of TVG, TVE, RTVV. (International sales: 6 Sales, Madrid.) Produced by Manuel Cristobal, Oriol Ivern. Executive producers, Maria Arochena, Angel de la Cruz, Toni Marin, Tono Folguera, Daniel Martinez. Directed, edited by Ignacio Ferreras. Screenplay, Angel de la Cruz, Paco Roca, Ferreras, Rosanna Cecchini, based on the comicbook by Roca. With: Alvaro Guevara, Tacho Gonzalez, Mabel Rivera. The subject of old age gets the kind of attention it deserves but is too rarely afforded in the affecting "Wrinkles," Ignacio Ferreras' animated study of the friendship between two seniors in a nursing home. Featuring lovable but credible characters and a beautifully crafted, understated plot that emerges elegantly from their fears, fantasies and forgetfulness, this thought-provoking, universally comprehensible item skews naturally towards adult auds, but its animated format could plausibly appeal to a younger demographic. Wider exposure is assured for the pic, submitted to the Academy for animated-feature consideration. Retired bank manager Emilio (voiced by Alvaro Guevara) lives with his son and daughter-in-law, but when he becomes increasingly irritable and forgetful, he is put into a home. There, he befriends garrulous Argentinean Miguel (Tacho Gonzalez), who renames Emilio "Rockefeller." Miguel cheerfully swindles the other residents out of small amounts of cash but is also full of handy insider tips, such as how the nurses appraise the residents' mental state by reference to the neatness of their dress. Other inmates include Dolores (Mabel Rivera), whose husband has advanced Alzheimer's, and a woman who sits by a window, elegantly smoking imaginary cigarettes and fantasizing about riding the Orient Express. Initially, Miguel scorns their tenuous grip on reality, but as Emilio slides ever further into forgetfulness, Miguel, fearful of losing his friend, becomes increasingly protective of him. One of the writers, Paco Roca, is the author of the same-name comicbook on which "Wrinkles" is based, and the source material's emotional authenticity has been transferred intact to the screen. Although nothing here quite matches the moving, life-in-five-minutes montage in Pixar's "Up," one swooping flashback sequence comes very close. The story slips as easily between past and present as the characters do. There are few frames that could not have been done in live-action, but the decision to use animation means the "real" and fantasy sequences can be dealt with as precise visual equals. This is crucial given the pic wants to show that the vividly colorful fantasies into which its characters retreat may be better places than their home, seen in often subdued tones. The animation technique deployed is uncluttered 2D, a world away from digital's ability to replicate reality, but sharp use of telling gestures and expressions, redolent of Raymond Briggs, compensates well for the lack of flexibility. There is plenty of rich detail to enjoy, while clever use of reflections and shadows turns the apparently comfortable facilities into a hard place that at times evokes gothic horror. Sound work is attended to with an ear attuned to absolute realism. Emotions aside, pic has a barbed edge, attacking the kinds of costly convalescent homes that contain never-used swimming pools; the clients, as Miguel acidly reminds Emilio, are not the folks who live there but the people who are paying. The strings of Nani Garcia's score sometimes soar dangerously close to a sentimentality that's happily absent elsewhere.Camera (color), David Cubero; music, Nani Garcia; sound (Dolby Digital), Cinemar Films; animation, Baltasar Pedrosa. After departure, Berlusconi clout lingers

ROME -- While Silvio Berlusconi is no longer Italy's prime minister, he isn't about to step out of the spotlight.Last week saw the former PM release a record album, defend himself against numerous charges in court and watch his holdings sink in the wake of his ouster. The fourth CD of Berlusconi-penned Neapolitan love songs, "Vero Amore" (True Love), crooned by close pal Mariano Apicella, went out on independent Italo label Artist First. It includes tunes titled "Stay With Me," which smacks of wishful thinking, and "Come What May," which, with the three trials -- recommencing now that Berlusconi has lost immunity as the country's leader -- sounds appropriate.Court cases revolving around Berlusconi promptly resumed Nov. 23, with one trial involving charges that he paid for sex with a Moroccan dancer who at the time was a minor, another long-standing case centered around allegedly fraudulent Mediaset TV rights deals, and a third, separate trial regarding an alleged ring to procure prostitutes for Berlusconi, who is not a defendant in that case.Berlusconi, who attended the Mediaset trial, maintains his innocence in the trials in which he is a defendant.Meanwhile, the Milan stock exchange continued to batter Mediaset, with its share price sinking last week to below 2 ($2.70) for the first time ever. The company's outlook might even be worse with a member of the anti-Berlusconi opposition in power, instead of the nonpolitical government headed by Mario Monti.Italians are beginning to wonder whether they are seeing the country's TV landscape already beginning to change.Last week, tiny channel La7, owned by telco giant Telecom Italia Media, announced it had doubled daytime ratings to a still small but significant 4.7% share, and vowed to forge on with ambitious new shows, including one by standup comic and noted anti-Berlusconi helmer Sabina Guzzanti ("Draquila -- Italy Trembles").Pubcaster RAI scored a whopping 42% primetime share Nov. 21 with an entertainment spectacle hosted by hugely popular Sicilian showman Rosario Fiorello, which not only featured live performances by Coldplay and Michael Buble but also a satirical monologue waxing nostalgic about the Berlusconi government. It was "folkloristic, kind of happy," Fiorello reminisced in the show. "Now everything has changed, and nobody talks about sex anymore."While it's too early to gauge the impact of an upcoming post-Berlusconi era on Italy's entertainment industry and pop culture, it's a safe bet Italians will continue to seek solace from their crisis in laughs.Italo film figures for the first half of 2011 show six homegrown comedies among the top 10 box office draws. Gillespie Quits Zombie Pride & Prejudice

Third director bites the dustLots of films lumber through Development Hell, but Pride And Prejudice And Zombies seems to be suffering more than most on the Production Plains of Dis. The undead literary comedy-horror mash-up has just lost Craig Gillespie, who's the third director to decide he's had enough.Gillespie (Lars And The Real Girl, Fright Night) had inherited the film from Mike White, who'd had to drop out due to a commitment at HBO. White in turn had picked up the project when David O Russell dropped it, favouring a trip to Old St Louis with Vince Vaughn. Other names in the hat previously included Neil Marshall (The Descent,Centurion) and Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound), but whether this news puts them back in the running (or whether they're still interested) remains to be seen.Deadline cite Gillespie's departure as an amicable one to do with casting issues. This is a polite way of saying that nobody seems to want to be in the film. The lead role of the zombie-smashing Elizabeth Bennet has to date apparently been turned down by Natalie Portman (still a producer, as far as we know), Emma Stone, Mia Wasikowska and, most recently, Blake Lively. Shooting was supposed to get going at the beginning of next year, but with no cast and now, once again, no director, Lionsgate must be thinking about reorganising their diary.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits International Trailer: Hijinks on the High Seas

Aardman Animation can do no wrong, ladies and gentlemen: From Chicken Run to Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, these folks stick to loopy, yet dry material and make it fun for kids and adults every time. In their new feature The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Aardman takes buccaneering out of Jack Sparrow’s realm and back into the world of kiddy imagination. The new international trailer features all the bug eyes and red beards you can muster, plus the vocal talents of Hugh Grant, Jeremy Piven, and Salma Hayek. Of course, this is the international trailer. America isn’t good enough for narration touting “luxuriant beards!” The movie itself reminds me a bit of the underrated James and the Giant Peach adaptation from ‘96, with its fantastical seafaring and splashy claymation. I assume this movie doesn’t get as dark as that did, but Aardman Animation’s penchant for wryness and wisdom may, in fact, qualify the company to be the heir apparent to Roald Dahl. AP: NBC Sports Leaving 30 Rock

The Deadline team is covering the News Corp shareholders meeting inside and outside LA’s Fox Studios. Nikki Finke is now writing from staff and news reports. 4TH UPDATE, NOON WRITETHRU: News Corp.’s annual shareholder meeting todayat LA’s Fox Studios turned into a pitched battle of words and accusations and insults.Rupert Murdoch’s critics lined up at two microphones and vented their anger at what they consider to bea corporate culture run amok. At the sametime the Chairman/CEO’s defendersopposed the shareholder calls for better corporate governance and the separation of the chairman/CEO title in order to have a CEO independent of Murdoch.Rupert, for his part, could barely stay polite when he was challenged again and again.”I hate to call you a liar, but I don’t believe you,” he cut off shareholder Stephen Mayne, director of the Australian Shareholders Association who was criticizingNews Corp’scorporate governance.Edward Mason of the Church of England spoke in support of the motion that would oust Murdoch as chairman. But Murdoch interrupted Mason almost immediately, saying “your investments haven’t been that great”. Other shareholders were focused on the UK phone hacking scandal and its origins within the company. UK parliament member Tom Watsoncaught a plane from London to LAjust to confrontMurdoch during today’s shareholders meeting. He asked in a very Britishpolite way whether the chairman and CEO was aware of more allegations, this timeof computer hacking, at News Corp-owned newspaperNews of the World. Murdoch said he wasn’t andresponded, “I have assured that what went wrong a few years ago and the recentrumors by you is being worked out with the police. We will put thisright.”Watson was interrupted byNews Corp board member and Murdoch ally Viet Dihn, who said, “We’re fully cooperating with the police and aren’t permitted to comment onallegations per their instruction. I welcome any information you have for our investigation after the meeting.”But Murdoch told the shareholders:”I promise you absolutely that we will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of this and get it right.” Murdoch also tried to reassure shareholders that News Corp was doing well financially, boasting about”digital treasure droves” from New Media and results showing that cable channels were providing half of the company’s total profit. ‘But that didn’t appear to calm the shareholders at the microphones. Especially with institutional investors like Calipers, the Christian Brothers investment services, and theAustralian Shareholders Associationcalling for an independent CEO. Outside, members of the media and police far outnumbered a small group of protesters numbering about 50 in total who gathered at the main gate of Fox Studios. Occupy Los Angeles, according to information posted on the Occupy Wall Street offshoot’s website, planned to protest “one-sided reporting, job cuts, phone hacking, and bad governance.” Besides a “Fox News Lies” banner, protesters seemed to focus mainly on animal rights and anti-war issues. There was no disruption to the work of studio employees who were allowed to go in without incident. 2ND UPDATE, 9:45 AM: News Corp intentionally drove the shuttle carrying media to the shareholders meeting on the Fox lot through a side gate so the press wouldn’t see the protesters. UPDATE, 9:59 PM: A British Member of Parliament scheduled to join News Corp stockholders inside Fox’s Zanuck Theatre is expected to address protesters in front of the studio on Pico Boulevard before heading into the meeting, one of the organizers told Deadline late Thursday. Labor Party MP Tom Watson, a key figure in the Parliament’s investigation of the phone-hacking scandal, has said he plans to present new allegations of other types of technological surveillance methods News Corp has used in addition to phone hacking by representatives of the now-defunct News of the World. Holders of proxy shares — apart from institutional and other groups who plan to vote against Murdoch-allied board members — are also certain to have harsh questions for company execs. PREVIOUSLY, 7:31 PM: News Corp shareholders arriving for their annual meeting Friday at the Fox lot on Pico Blvd. in West Los Angeles will encounter some uninvited greeters bearing unhappy tidings. Occupy Los Angeles, according to information posted on the Occupy Wall Street offshoot’s website, plans to protest “one-sided reporting, job cuts, phone hacking, and bad governance.” Rupert Murdoch and other company leaders are expected to hear from a major pension fund and other stockholder groups disgruntled by the way members of the Murdoch family and their supporters on the board have handled the phone-hacking scandal in the U.K. and other company activity. Those shareholders may be allowed to lodge their complaints but lack the clout or votes to remove any of the Murdochs or their supporters from the board. At least they’ll get inside the meeting. Occupy L.A. protesters are extremely unlikely to get beyond the front gate or anywhere on the lot, let alone near the studio’s Zanuck Theater where the meeting is being held. Studio security will be tighter than usual, and anyone without authorization won’t get beyond the gate. Efforts to reach protest organizers were unsuccessful.

Shia LaBeouf Apparently Involved with Fight Outdoors Vancouver Bar

Years old ho ho. 'Pirates from the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,' the 4th entry within the Disney franchise, manages their email list of home video releases now, offering pure fun and adventure as The Actor-brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz swash buckle their way in all directions. If 'Pirates' provides you with scurvy, almost always there is 'Bad Teacher,' an extremely disappointing comedy starring Cameron Diaz that essentially offers up a lady version of Jack Black from 'School of Rock' (though she's a great deal simpler around the eyes). And, for fans having a sweet tooth for 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,' Warner Home Video has come up with a remarkable 40th anniversary set. Continue reading. 'Pirates from the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' How It Is About: The Actor-brad Pitt returns to his legendary role of Captain Jack Sparrow within this action-packed follow up. Sparrow crosses pathways using the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), an old lover and also the daughter from the legendary sailing Blackbeard (Ian McShane), who's using Sparrow's title to mount an expedition to obtain the fabled Elixir of youth. She forces him aboard the "Full Anne's Revenge," Blackbeard's vessel, plus they trigger with an adventure that starts them from the The spanish language and also the British, the second headed up by Jack's old enemy, Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Hurry), on the way experiencing mermaids, a variety of treachery, voodoo and miracle. It's Kinda Like: 'Treasure Island' meets 'The Crimson Pirate' What We Should Say: This edition of 'Pirates from the Caribbean' inhales new existence right into a franchise that -- when of 'At World's End' -- had degenerated into slapstick comedy and foolishness. Having a sigh of relief, we are able to securely state that 'On Stranger Tides' has reverted to the original's wit, sass and focus on adventure. Depp is surer than ever before in the role because the amoral sailing (can there be every other kind?), Cruz helps make the perfect female foil for Sparrow, and McShane and Hurry are badly as sailing-bad could be. Elizabeth Halsey (Diaz) is really a talking and coarse-tongued junior high school teacher who can't wait to marry her meal ticket so she will quit her regular job. When he dumps her, she unwillingly dates back to work on the college, where she shows movies rather than teaching. She soon sets her sights on the handsome substitute teacher (Justin Timberlake) and applies to motion an agenda to earn supplemental income to conserve money for any boob job, constantly rivaling the school's overzealous but many revered teacher (Lucy Punch) and fending off advances in the sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel It's Kinda Like: 'Bad Santa' meets 'School of Rock' What We Should Say: Take one promising concept (a really bad teacher running amok in senior high school), give a fairly hot actress (Cameron Diaz) within the lead, offer her a men and women foil, then screw it up with dumb situations, gratuitous sexual jokes and innuendo, along with a lame plot twist, and you've got a movie that's never as funny as it ought to be. Remember how nasty 'Bad Santa' was? We'd wished this film could be a minimum of as nasty (in line with the one-sheets and teaser games) but -- despite Diaz's sometimes brazen performance -- i was disappointed. There's a great Cameron Diaz-vehicle clean sequence, however, which can be well worth the cost of the DVD rental -- but simply barely. &bull Extra supplies: A chuckle erased moments and outtakes, along with a couple behind-the-moments featurettes. They have packed a Blu-ray and DVD from the film, together with another disc of bonus features, within an extra-large 8 1/2 by 11 1/2-inch box which consists of some great Willy Wonka souvenirs: 'Pure Imagination: The building of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,' a 144 page behind-the-moments production book 14 pages of replica production correspondence a Wonka Bar Container with scratch-n-sniff pens and perfumed eraser along with a facsimile Wonka Bar Golden Ticket. James Cameron on The Reason Why You Could See 'Terminator 2' and 'Aliens' Transformed into three dimensional Soon

Even at the time of the items might be considered a backlash against three dimensional -- "may" should you wasted your hard gained cash on an undesirable up-conversion "might notInch if you be James Cameron -- these James Cameron still stands defiant. To become fair, he's the authority to achieve this: 'Avatar' might have created clones of rip-off three dimensional suitors, but that is definitely not Cameron's fault, with no you have asked Cameron's painstaking focus on three dimensional detail. James Cameron was given the most popular Mechanics Breakthrough Leadership Award in NY City on Monday evening, and also the Oscar-winning director spoke to Moviefone one-on-one concerning the three dimensional backlash, his rerelease of 'Titanic' in three dimensional in April of 2012 (more about that here), and why the prosperity of 'Titanic' just can lead to 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' and 'Aliens' obtaining the three dimensional treatment too. It appears as with every blockbuster three dimensional movie, the reviews are that increasing numbers of people are choosing for that 2D version. This happened with 'Pirates 4.' Following the good will of 'Avatar,' how can won by you back a crowd that feels fooled? I do not think this is the situation whatsoever. I do not think the crowd feels fooled, I believe the crowd from time to time feels as though they are not receiving their money's worth once they visit a movie where they are having to pay for any premium ticket cost and it is kind of sloppily transformed into three dimensional and it is not delivering. Which usually is really because the studio imposes three dimensional around the filmmaker and also the filmmaker states, "Look I am making the film, all of you do by using it what you would like.Inch Which can be a bad attitude if you are not shooting for three dimensional, it will not look of the same quality. So I am not in support of conversion. I believe that's potentially a method to do minor harm to industry. So it is possible to backlash? I believe this complete story is trumped up through the media. You realize, they built up, it's this fantastic new factor, and today we are likely to tear it lower. You appear annoyed by this. Are you currently annoyed by this story? No, no. I am not frustrated whatsoever. I believe it is a natural span of the evolution associated with a new factor. However I think people need to comprehend and don't forget: three dimensional revenues for movies have become 40 % annually, annually, for 3 years. And therefore are forecasted to achieve that the coming year. E-commerce isn't disappearing. You are not likely to put that tooth paste in the tube. We have gone in one percent from the market 4 years ago to 21 percent of movie revenues now. So, I believe it's being very broadly recognized on the global basis -- much much more worldwide than locally. So, three dimensional will probably be around forever. Now you ask ,: When will it achieve exactly the same amounts of broadcast? We have got about 110 camera systems at this time which are out all the time -- the trucks are out all the time. We have done 160 sporting occasions also it rises 20 of recent ones every few several weeks. So that's now beginning to blow up. You pointed out that you are not in support of conversion, but they're transforming 'Titanic.' Was that process harder than you would expect? Are you wishing using the results? I was expecting so that it is really challenging top quality results. Which demonstrated to become accurate. Such as the learning from the film and also the three dimensional conversion, we are investing 18 million dollars in a single year -- and it'll barely be completed in time, in Feb -- to get it done up to and including standard comparable to getting shot it in three dimensional. Which, obviously, could have been my first choice. Lacking getting a period machine available, I'm not sure a method to do this. Can we see other films in the James Cameron catalog converted? We're exploring a brand new market for classic library game titles which are much beloved films that might possess a new existence within the theatrical marketplace. We are just going to need to see. I am talking about, perform the amounts support the thought of a 'Terminator 2' or 'Aliens'? I'm not sure, individuals could be awesome movies to transform. But I'm not sure -- we must observe how much we make from 'Titanic.' You are able to contact Mike Ryan on Twitter. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Phones fuel and frustrate film auds

Mobile phones can both be considered a nuisance along with a useful method of getting more moviegoers into theaters, ticket retailers and participants stated at Variety and Stradella's Film Marketing Summit on Tuesday. For Fandango, ticket sales on mobile products have become from 1% to twentyPercent from the online ticket seller's business in a few years, based on Ted Hong, the business's chief marketing officer. Fandango has become testing bar code scanners that may be scanned in theaters when tix are bought on mobile phones. Two participants are presently testing the service, having a third developing board soon. But as customers depend more about their mobile phones to text and tweet, their elevated usage in theaters is turning off moviegoers to the stage where exhibs have to take them off throughout tests. "When someone's unhappy (concerning the no mobile phone policy), I only say inform your buddies," stated Landmark Theaters Boss Ted Mundorff, adding that "the worst culprits would be the acquisition people at film festivals. It's already against all odds these films get acquired." Panelists also stressed the merits of social networking like a tool to enhance ticket sales, whether sites like Twitter, Facebook or Eventful are used on the mobile device or otherwise. "Letting people participate the procedure takes care of in spades," stated Jordan Glazier, Boss of Eventful. "That is what social networking is perfect for,Inch adding that the online campaign that interacts with potential moviegoers produces "a feeling of affiliation, belonging and kinship" which "means theatergoing." Fandango's Hong agreed, saying, "The energy of on the internet is it's really a dialogue. TV continues to be one of the ways.Inch All agreed the development of internet marketing means galleries have to learn how to consult with audiences in a different way. "You want to safeguard the theatrical window," Hong stated, "but we would like galleries to prevent marketing and begin hooking up with audiences to the stage where it does not seem like marketing." And Landmark's Mundorff asked for that galleries save money to aid a movie after it opens in theaters. "Many of the time they are not supported," he stated. Mundorff is not keen on discounting ticket prices to fill seats. He did not agree to Lionsgate's pair-track of Groupon and Fandango to discount tickets for "The Lincoln subsequently Lawyer" captured. "Once the consumer is purchasing a $6 ticket you're devaluing movies," he stated. However the ploy labored for Fandango and Lionsgate, which stated 89% of those who required benefit of the discount stated "they will not have seen the film been with them not been for Groupon," Hong stated. Mundorff does not anticipate a period when film advertisements no more come in newspapers. "People read reviews and reviews drive our business," Mundorff stated. "When the industry abandons newspapers, newspapers will abandon reviews." The Alamo Drafhouse chain of theaters is depending on positive person to person and serving alcohol inside a more laidback setting to draw in auds. "Our theaters are places of worship, and let me preach to cinema fans of various variations," stated Henri Mazza, chief creative officer from the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The Texas-based chain has 10 locations, mostly round the condition, and something in Winchester, Virginia, but is searching to grow into La and NY soon. Tokyo: An uphill struggle

'Tokyo Drifter''1911'Now in its 24th edition, the Tokyo Intl. Film Festival has long aspired to be in the same class as Cannes, Venice and Berlin. It says so right in its publicity materials.Japan, as TIFF chairman Tom Yoda mentioned at the pre-fest presser in September, is the world's second largest film market after the U.S., with a big, thriving film industry whose products win major international plaudits. It deserves to play in the big leagues. But TIFF also faces stiff competition from the rival Busan fest, which unspools right before TIFF and siphons off many hot Asian pics, including those from Japan."We are the last major festival of the year," Yoda lamented to assembled journos. "It makes things difficult for us."Under Yoda, now in his fourth year as fest chairman, TIFF has revamped its main sections (competition, Special Screenings, Japanese Eyes and Winds of Asia), while adopting a new "green" theme, beginning with the TIFF Green Carpet (made of recycled materials) and continuing with its Natural TIFF section of eco-themed pics.On March 11, however, nature showed its dark side: A 9.0 earthquake, a massive tsunami and reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant devastated the northern Tohoku region -- and made organizers seriously consider cancelling TIFF. But they decided to press on and, as Yoda put it, "use the power of films" to aid the victims.During the fest, set to unspool Oct. 22-30, TIFF will sponsor the Arigato Project -- a multipronged disaster-relief initiative that includes funding raising and fest screenings on Oct. 25 in Sendai, Tohoku's biggest city. The fest will also show post-disaster pics shot in Tohoku in its Natural TIFF section and elsewhere."In general, though, the disaster has not influenced our programming," Yoda says. "Just as always, we have tried to find the best films from around the world."But TIFF, as well as the Japanese biz as a whole, is also wrestling with the ongoing drift of young auds away from all but big event pics to other, more personal entertainment platforms, from game consoles to smartphones."We have to better communicate Japan's rich film culture to young people," says Yoda. "Otherwise it will die away."TIFF is keeping the flame burning not only by promoting its lineup on Facebook and other social media, but also by beefing up its programming with a section dedicated to the career of Kyoko Kagawa, a still-active thesp beloved by Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu and other Golden Age giants. Also, though Japan makes toons, games, pics and other contents with worldwide appeal, the local biz, as Yoda noted, "is not always aggressive in marketing them." Now in its eighth edition, the three-day Tiffcom market (Oct. 24-26) is dedicated to promoting Japanese content to buyers from Asia and elsewhere, with nearly 200 sellers taking booths."Japanese TV dramas in particular should be better-known abroad," says Yoda, pointing to the success of Korean dramas in penetrating overseas markets, especially Japan. This year, Tiffcom will sponsor a special corner where TV drama sellers can present their wares."Despite the disasters, we are confident this year's festival will be a success," concludes Yoda. "We invite everyone to come to Tokyo and see what we have to offer."HIGHLIGHTS"The Three Musketeers"Director: Paul W.S. Universal Cable Prods To Produce First Project For Broadcast Sibling NBC: Elmore Leonard Adaptation By Numbers Creators

EXCLUSIVE: In its first development season as a broadcast player, Universal Cable Prods has sold two projects, including one to corporate sibling NBC. The NBC project hails from Numbers creators Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton as well as Doug Liman and Dave Bartis’s UCP-based production company Hypnotic. It is based on a short story from Elmore Leonard’s anthology When the Women Come Out To Dance, the book that also features the short story Fire In The Hole that FX’s series Justified is based on. The NBC project centers on a Colombian mail-order bride who finds herself working as a “fixer” in South Miami as she struggles to escape her troubled past. It joins UCP’s Jason Tracey-penned detective drama Metropolitan, also from Hypnotic, which recently sold to Fox. And there are a few more broadcast pitches in various stages, said UCP’s SVP Maira Suro, who oversees the studio’s development for networks other than the UCP-affiliated USA and Syfy. This is part of the recent strategy implemented by UCP and NBC-affiliated Universal Television to each become a full-service TV studio supplying broadcast and cable networks. UCP and Universal TV (formerly Universal Media Studios) were part of one NBC Universal TV production entity, UMS, that was developing for both broadcast and cable until 2008 when UCP was spun off from UMS and cable and broadcast production was split up between the two. For UPC, supplying NBC is a priority, Suro said. “For us, part of our expansion, along with selling to other cable and broadcast networks, is serving our sister network NBC,” she said. “If we can be in any way part of the network’s success and help its turnaround, that would be fantastic and a win-win.” As for making the transition from producing for cable, where budgets on average are lower, to broadcast, “I’m sure there will be some adjustments but we are not chasing the broadcast model,” said Suro, whose development team includes Stacey Levin, Garrett Kemble and Stephanie Albrycht. “We are very selective in the projects we take out and are doing them efficiently, so we are confident that we can execute them in the same way we do our successful cable series.” “We won’t be taking out a show like Terra Nova,” she added, referring to Fox’s big-budget, live-action/CGI prehistoric drama. One thing the company will need in reinventing itself as a full-fledged studio is to change its name from Universal Cable Prods. The sale to NBC marks a homecoming of sorts for Hypnotic, which was previously based at Universal TV (then UMS). Hypnotic originally developed both Covert Affairs and their its UCP-produced MTV comedy series I Just Want My Pants Back for NBC and moved to UCP after NBC passed on the projects and USA picked up Covert Affairs. Hypnotic has now emerged as UCP’s most prolific pod with three series — USA’s Covert Affairs and Suits and MTV’s Pants — and a slew of projects in development. Fallaci and Heuton are with the Rothman Brecher Agency.

Fantastic Fest: Paranormal Activity 3 a Spooky Misfire, But Will There Be Still Time to Salvage It?

There's an inkling on an outing that Fantastic Fest’s secret screening Wednesday would use be Paranormal Activity 3, using the viral VHS tapes showing up in Austin now as well as the apparently perfect timing for your horror follow-up, which hits theaters country wide on March. 21. Once the surprise world premiere was confirmed with a packed audience during the night time on Wednesday, it absolutely was an unpredicted lots of people saw coming. Precisely how did Paranormal Activity 3 measure to its forerunners — and simply what does it imply it doesn’t complement whatsoever having its recent trailer? First, the setup: Inside the summer season of 2006, just right before the occasions in the initial few films, adult brothers and sisters Katie (Katie Featherston) as well as the pregnant Kristi (Sprague Graydon) uncover a lot of old family VHS tapes utilizing their grandmother’s house, one of these simple is ominously labeled “September 1988.” Costly to that particular month inside their totally 󈨔s childhood (full of Teddy Ruxpins and hair scrunchies) when, as two youthful women dealing with their mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) and her new-ant live-in boyfriend Dennis, the entire household is progressively accosted having a mysterious unseen pressure that shakes the walls, opens and shuts entrance doors, and does generally creepy things throughout the evening. Coincidentally, youthful Kristi (a wonderfully natural Chloe Csengery) eventually ends up getting a completely new invisible friend named Toby who predicts her throughout the evening and tries to get her to accomplish strange things. Fortunately, Dennis can be a wedding videographer together with a horny dude, when an attempted home video sex tape session with Julie is interrupted by an “earthquake” — which he spies a unique, impossible shadow stalking them inside the playback — he begins creating video cameras at home. When co-company company directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost (Catfish) stay with web site that’s been organized on the account in Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2 — i.e., build dread using the limited vision from the products is seen using a camera lens, break monotony with spooky jump scares, repeat — their follow-up is quite effective. Like the initial few films, Paranormal Activity 3 makes good usage of simple ploys that setup audience expectation for something — anything, really — to shatter the illusion that will get up within the protective walls of suburban domestic bliss. Among Dennis’s homemade camera rigs, attached to have an oscillating fan, supplies a clever left-to-right panning view of the house that can take proper care of a few occasions but is overused. Rather, it’s the initial-person moments, seen using a handheld camera, that really perform best. Sooner or later youthful Katie needles a family group friend into playing a game title title of Bloody Mary that goes horribly wrong like the audience she’s asking being scared, as well as the film mostly provides. But while moments in Paranormal Activity 3 are terrifically frightful (there’s a great one-take set piece which comes off as being a miracle trick, to great effect) the cut examined at Fantastic Fest is just too slow a burn, too apparent, and contains an ending that can a obvious, crisp detour into horror clich. It’s one step to possess vague basement-dwelling demons swirling across the initial few films, chasing after after their sufferers getting a sinister specificity that signifies that Katie and Kristi aren’t staying at random specific. Nevertheless the way film author Christopher B. Landon (Paranormal Activity 2, Disturbia) decides to tie the trilogy along with a genre trope that’s been done numerous occasions before undercuts the unsettling work laid with the initial few films and, jarringly, takes the series in the disappointing, less-satisfying direction. (It’s worth mentioning that, just like the last Paranormal Activities, there’s pointless behind the way in which we're watching the products in Dennis’s tapes, which regularly accelerate in a single event to another as if someone’s pushing the short-forward button. It’s found footage, yes, but discovered by whom?) Here’s the curious part: The Truly Amazing Fest world premiere screening was prefaced with the disclaimer the film wasn’t percent done,” which sometimes means elements like color timing or final credits aren’t in place. However when the film ended as well as the screen faded to black, holding irritatingly extended around the blank, black screen based on an oppressive white-colored noise tantamount to literal deafening silence — an unpopular, fancy move that baffled and annoyed some inside the audience — the realization occur this film as well as the film represented inside the trailer released yesterday will not function as the same creature. I caught a lot of the new trailer yesterday before shutting it well, reluctant to become spoiled with the many, many apparently spoilery elements it contained. But my fears were for naught the majority of the moments I did so see inside the trailer, the big unveils and occurrences which will surely be memorable moments inside the film, weren’t incorporated whatsoever inside the cut. [Spoiler warning, ironically.] Coming back to check out a clip again, I discovered that no crazy beats inside the trailer, like the priest character, the house burning, and how figures are tossed around, handled to go into towards the film we'd within Austin. [Finish spoilers.] Just what does meaning? Are Joost and Schulman still retooling their film, trying out crazy different moments and being before assembling Paranormal Activity 3 due to its March. 21 release? Did Vital’s marketing team just happen to use very different footage inside the editing room? Could there frequently be several version released theatrically, telling the storyplot of Katie and Kristi’s childhood haunting via different moments adopted home video? (That could be a neat idea think about the chaos come review time. Vital reps, incidentally, did not immediately respond to Movieline’s request clarification.) Unhealthy news on the account is you will discover only 72 hours to go to before Paranormal Activity 3 hits screens country wide, to ensure that because it stands this version in the film will probably be appreciated just like a misfire from the follow-up/prequel. (You will discover less days until Vital sneaks the film into its top 20 Twitter-selected urban centers on March. 18.) If Fantastic Fest will be a trial to look for the way a far more subdued, slow-simmer would play, the filmmakers should get cracking to punch up to make sure that it doesn’t come down just like a movie trumped by its own trailer.
