CBS Pilot Quean Not Going Forward After Sony Threatens Legal Action Over Alleged Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Similarities
EXCLUSIVE: CBS’ drama pilot Quean has become the victim of a legal standoff between two media congloms. I have learned that Warner Bros TV, which produces the project with Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures, yesterday decided to pull the plug upon the advice of an outside legal firm. When it was announced, Quean, written by The L Word creatorIlene Chaiken, sounded like a typical CBS procedural: It centers on an edgy and independent Millennial hacker girl who teams up with an Oakland police detective to solve crimes. The pilot secured Jaume Collet-Serra as director and was moving to the casting stage when Warner Bros. TV received a letter from Sony Pictures threatening a lawsuit over alleged similarities to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which Sony has the rights to and is adapting as a movie trilogy. (The first movie, directed by David Fincher, was released last year; the other two have been greenlighted). Chaiken proceeded with an extensive p.1 rewrite of the pilot, changing most key plot elements, including the lead’s employer from a PI to a law firm, her boss from a white male private investigator to a black female lawyer, and the protagonist herself from a loner to a girl with a boyfriend. I hear CBS brass got the rewrite on Saturday and liked it. But it was also sent by Warner Bros TV to an outside law firm retained for the case. With Sony still threatening legal action, the firm recommended that the project doesn’t go forward over one major similarity: the lead character being a hacker. And yesterday, Warner Bros pulled the plug. This is a rare legal battle in a business where most new ideas are well forgotten old ones. For instance, the CW pilot The Selection draws parallels to The Hunger Games, the network’s First Cut to Grey’s Anatomy. Sony TV’s CBS drama Baby Big Shot sounds on paper like a male Suits;NBC’s ensemble firefighter drama Chicago Fire is being compared to Rescue Me;and CBS has the modern Sherlock Holmes pilot from CBS TV Studios while Warner Bros has been doing Holmes movies and the BBC has a 21st century Holmes series on the air. The list goes on and on. There have been attempts at legal action in the past, but but I can’t think of of an outcome similar to this one in television, where the premise is important but key for each project is execution. For example, ABC’s comedy Less Then Perfect was an unofficial U.S. version of Betty La Fea, which didn’t prevent ABC from doing a successful adaptation of the Colombian telenovela several years later inUgly Betty as the two shows took the original premise of an unattractive female assistant in different directions. Similarly, TNT’s The Closerhad been referred to as an unofficial U.S. take on Prime Suspect, but it was very different from NBC’s official remake earlier this season. Maybe Sony is considering doing a Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV series down the road and wouldn’t want a similar concept in the marketplace.

Fox box marks Herrmann's 100th
'Bernard Herrmann at 20th Century-Fox'Just in time for the close of his centennial year, an enterprising film-music label has released a box set of all the music that composer Bernard Herrmann wrote for 20th Century Fox: 18 scores, or more than a third of his entire output as a film composer.Varese Sarabande's 14-CD, "Bernard Herrmann at 20th Century Fox" set is said to be the most comprehensive collection of one composer's work for a single studio ever released. Included are such film-score classics as "Jane Eyre," "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth."Some of this music has been released before, although producers Nick Redman and Robert Townson say advances in technology have enabled them to coax better fidelity than ever from the 50-to-60-year-old recordings. And four scores from the 1940s and '50s -- "Hangover Square," "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," "White Witch Doctor" and "5 Fingers" -- make their debuts in this collection.Herrmann, who started his career with "Citizen Kane" and ended with "Taxi Driver," composed 50 feature scores, but some (notably such Hitchcock classics as "Vertigo" and "Psycho") are more revered now than during the composer's lifetime."No one captured emotional states -- especially the extremes of desire, anxiety or loneliness -- more powerfully," says Herrmann biographer Steven Smith, "probably because he lived in those extremes and was a highly sensitive person, in both the positive and negative meaning of that word." Smith and L.A. writer Julie Kirgo penned the essays in the 105-page hardcover book that accompanies the set.The nearly 15 hours of music "demonstrate an astonishing range and an unparalleled drive for musical invention," says Townson. "What you hear is an obsessively creative mind striving not only to fulfill his job but, from the sounds of it, to amuse himself."The scores span from 1944 ("Jane Eyre") to 1962 ("Tender Is the Night"). According to Redman, a Fox consultant who is in charge of the studio's music-restoration program, pre-1953 scores were recorded on optical film; transferring them to digital for release was complicated and not always successful back in the 1990s.Improved technology now allows for cleaner, better sound, and the Herrmann box is a showcase for the Fox program, which has restored and preserved about 800 of the studio's scores since it began in 1993.Fox music chief Alfred Newman championed Herrmann, hiring him regularly throughout the 1940s and 1950s despite what Townson calls "his volatile and combative personality."The results included an entire piano concerto for the murder melodrama "Hangover Square," a groundbreaking use of theremins and electric violins for "The Day the Earth Stood Still," nine harps to replicate the sound of the sea in "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef" and the use of medieval instruments and five different organs for "Journey to the Center of the Earth."Smith says "time has vindicated" the approach of a man vastly underrated during his lifetime."He said the composer's first job was to get inside the drama," Smith says, "and that's exactly what he did: He created psychological portraits in music."Return to MUSIC FOR SCREENS: WINTER 2012 Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
