A Le Pacte discharge of a Lazennec & Associes, Maia Cinema, Vandertastic production. (Worldwide sales: Le Pacte, Paris.) Created by Gregoire Debailly, Gilles Sandoz. Co-producer, Hanneke van der Tas. Directed by Patricia Mazuy. Script, Simon Reggiani, Mazuy, Patrick Le Rolland. With: Marina Hands, Bruno Ganz, Josiane Balasko, Amanda Harlech, Isabel Karajan, Muftie, Lionel Dray, Olivier Perrier. (French, British, German dialogue)Even individuals intrigued by dressage will question what Patricia Mazuy, her producers and cast thought these were making with "Of Ladies and Horses." Intended to be the storyplot of the headstrong lady along with a jaded trainer involved in a fight of wills which will result in triumph, the cumbersome answers are hobbled by bad dialogue, sloppy editing and poor utilization of music. Nobody seems to become holding the reins, though Mazuy ("The King's Kids") isn't any stranger to filmmaking. "Horses" will probably be offer pasture carrying out a forecasted mid-December opening. Working-class Gracieuse (Marina Hands, her face frozen inside a look of sullen intensity) is overlooked by snobbish elite equine trainers, though her promising talent begs for discovery. She's keen to utilize world-famous trainer Franz (Bruno Ganz), but he's underneath the thumb of supercilious partner Josephine (Josiane Balasko). How Gracieuse works and Franz triumphs over his torpor is supposed to energize audiences, but the possible lack of visual acumen and lifeless storytelling stymie participation. Socialite Amanda Harlech's thesping debut, as Franz's client, is inauspicious, though no stars escape the banal characterizations.Camera (color), Caroline Champetier editor, Mathilde Muyard music, John Cale production designer, Eric Barboza costume designer, Nathalie Raoul. Examined at Locarno Film Festival (Piazza Grande), August. 10, 2011. Running time: 101 MIN. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com
